Fiestas in Benidorm, Alicante
- Travel tip: It doesn’t matter if you’re in a tiny village in a deserted area of Spain or in central Madrid, people of every age will party until sunrise at Fiesta time.
- Fact: Midnight on New Year’s Eve is often celebrated in Spain by eating a grape for every chime of the countdown clock.
Benidorm could be described as one year long fiesta and it certainly knows how to put on a party. So it’s really no surprise that there over fifty fiestas held here every year.
December & January
See in the New Year in the Triangle Square and watch the Three Kings procession on 5 January.
February
Everyone loves a carnival and this month brings a lively fancy dress carnival procession, culminating in the intriguing burial of the sardine.
March
One of the biggest fiestas is this month - the Fallas held to welcome in the Spring. Three sculptures are placed in different areas of the town on the 16th and following processions, street entertainment and noisy fireworks; these are majestically burnt 3 days later on the 19th.
April
Beautiful religious processions are held throughout Holy Week.
June
This month we have the Bonfires of St Juan, when paper based and wooden statues are burned on the nit del foc, 24 June. These figures can be seen in the central market and old town areas of the city in the days running up to the bonfires.
July
Appropriately for tourists, the first weekend in July sees the Fiesta to celebrate St Christopher and on the 16th is the Fiestas of the Carmen; Benidorm’s own patron saint, St James is celebrated on the 25th.
September
The best fiesta of all is held in the last week of September - the famous Moors and Christians festival, celebrating the time when the Moors were banished from the region.
This is a thrilling week of celebrations, feasts and lively entertainment. On the last day, feisty troops of Moors and Christians parade through town; the multi-coloured costumes and atmospheric music making this a fiesta not to miss.
November
From the second Friday of the month to the following Wednesday, is the city’s most important holy fiesta, celebrating Benidorm’s patron saints, El Virgen del Suffrage and Jaime Apostle
